The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism
Aiming to save lives by ensuring the health and social care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is co-delivered by trainers with lived experience of learning disability and autism who are paid for their time.
Having this consistent content and delivery means it is transferable between employers. It is the government’s preferred and recommended training and is recognised by national bodies advising on standards for the health and care sector.
Together we can prevent the many avoidable deaths like Oliver’s from happening again.
The animation below aims to help staff and employers across health and social care to understand Oliver’s Training and why it is so vitally important.
Accessing Oliver’s Training
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is delivered in two separate tiers.
Tier 1
This training is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need.
Tier 2
This training is for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.
Both tiers are comprised of two parts:
eLearning is part 1 of both Tier 1 and Tier 2 training.
Everyone needs to do the eLearning regardless of where they work and what tier of training they need to complete.
Part 2 training is a one day face to face mandatory workshop for health and social care staff and others who have any direct patient contact within their role.
The workshop content upskills the wider health and care workforce to provide appropriately adjusted care for people with a learning disability and autistic people to reduce health inequalities.

Who can attend the workshop training?
The workshop training is available for healthcare staff, clinical and non-clinical, who work for the Integrated Care Board (plus nominated other providers) who come into contact with the public as part of their role.
