The NHS Leadership Academy
The NHS Leadership Academy is dedicated to developing outstanding leadership across health and care through world-class learning and tailored development opportunities. Its mission is to support individuals, teams, and organisations to achieve excellence in leadership to improve patient outcomes and the overall NHS experience.
The NHS Leadership Academy hosts a suite of development programmes for every career stage including:
The RISE Programme – Mid and South Essex
The RISE Programme, is a bespoke leadership and talent development initiative designed specifically for colleagues from Black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds. Its name represents:
Resilience, Intelligence, Strength, Excellence
The RISE Programme is aimed at staff working in bands 2 through to 8b and focuses on supporting career progression, confidence building and leadership development. Participants in the programme receive coaching, mentoring and engagement with executive and non-executive leadership throughout and complete modules including leadership, emotional and cultural intelligence, change management and quality improvement project work.
The RISE Programme in MSE is hosted and delivered by EPUT and in 2023 received the Zenith Global Health Outstanding Team Award for its innovative efforts in supporting staff from minority backgrounds.
Launched in 2021, over 140 staff have graduated to date and many alumni have gone on to secure promotions, lead improvement projects and win recognition awards.

A programme of support that provides leaders and managers with the standards and development opportunities to ensure people have the right skills, the right support and the right accountabilities to deliver change.
The aims of the NHS Management and Leadership Programme are to make sure:
- NHS leaders and managers at all levels meet the standards and competencies our staff and patients expect of them
- all leaders and managers have access to professional development and support to meet the expected standards and competencies
- the NHS attracts, develops and retains the best talent
- the public has increased confidence in NHS leaders and managers, who feel a continued sense of pride in their profession

The purpose of NHS IMAS is to offer NHS organisations that need short or medium-term support, the means to access the management expertise that exists throughout the NHS: ‘By the NHS, for the NHS’.
The aims of NHS IMAS are to:
- provide the support that is needed by the NHS, but to do so in a way that builds a sustainable legacy.
- grow and develop local NHS talent, working with NHS leadership development.
- provide a real alternative to the private sector, while still offering the option to access their skills.
