Welcome to the MSE System-wide Area for Palliative and End-of-Life Care

Providing high-quality, compassionate care at the end of life is one of the most profound responsibilities in health and social care. This training area has been developed to support professionals across mid and south Essex Integrated Care System to deliver coordinated, person-centred palliative and end-of-life care that honours the dignity, values, and choices of individuals and their families.

In this space, you will find practical tools, evidence-based resources, and training modules designed to strengthen collaboration between healthcare providers, social care teams, voluntary organisations, and other key partners. Whether you’re working in hospitals, primary care, care homes, hospices, or in the community, this platform aims to build shared understanding and consistent practices across all sectors involved in end-of-life care.

The following training programmes are available to all colleagues working in palliative and end-of-life care settings across Essex, regardless of their employing organisation.

  • Frailty Plus Cancer – Tier 1 – 9 short modules of learning followed by an interactive quiz exploring topics including: understanding the changing face of cancer, understanding what frailty is and how the diagnostic process and treatment of cancer can affect frailty. Available here

  • Cancer+ How FrEDA Can Help Assess Patients in Cancer Pathways – 5 lessons to learn how to use FrEDA in SystemOne as an effective and efficient tool to help proactively identify all those with frailty, dementia or deemed likely to be within their last year of life (end of life). Available here

Support and training offers accessible to all current Farleigh Hospice employees.

  • Registered Nurse Verification of Expected Death – Half day, face to face training.
  • Use of Syringe Pumps – Half day, face to face training for Registered Nurses.
  • Palliative and End of Life Care for Registered Nurses: The Essentials – Three day course for Registered Nurses held at Farleigh Hospice, Chelmsford. Includes: communication skills, symptom management, ACP, DNACPR, identifying dying, bereavement, spirituality, ethics and self care.
  • Palliative and End of Life Care for Healthcare Support Workers – Two day course for Healthcare Support Workers held at Farleigh Hospice, Chelmsford. Includes: defining palliative care and end of life care, what normal dying looks like, understanding the benefits of a syringe pump, recognising total pain and exploration of supportive strategies, symptoms at end of life, ethical principles and importance.
  • Identifying Dying  Half day, face to face training.
  • Advance Care Planning – Half day, face to face training. Includes: PEACE, DNACPR, ACP, PPC, PPD, LPA etc.
  • End of Life Care for Domiciliary Care Workers – Three day course for Domiciliary Care Workers held at Farleigh Hospice, Chelmsford in collaboration with Essex County Council, St Luke’s Hospice and St Francis Hospices. Includes: what is palliative and end of life care, challenges in delivering end of life care, communication skills, bereavement, spirituality, managing symptoms at home, ACP and DNACPR.
  • DNACPR for Those Having Recording Conversations with Patients and Families – One day course for staff working at specialist level who complete DNACPR paperwork in the role of Senior Responsible Officer.
  • Advanced Palliative Care Course – 20 sessions (one per month) delivered virtually by Fairleigh Hospice. Includes all topics required for those working at specialist level in palliative care.
  • Principles of Palliative Care Course – 8 sessions delivered face to face at Farleigh Hospice, Chelmsford one day per week for 8 weeks. Includes all essential topics for those who are new to palliative care.

Support and training offers accessible to all current Saint Francis Hospice employees.

  • LSBU Degree and Masters Programmes in Palliative and End of Life Care 3 specialist modules delivered as a mixture of face to face and virtual. Modules include: pain and symptom management, psychosocial, spiritual and ethical aspects and dementia and other non-malignant conditions. Modules can be taken as stand alone or as part of a longer degree programme to achieve MSc. Programmes are eligible for HUK grant application funding.
  • Essential Palliative and End of Life Care One day course delivered face to face and virtually.
  • Advanced Communication Skills Training Two day course delivered face to face by experienced facilitators and actors for real time feedback.
